... The Port of Cartagena faces the future with a substantial improvement of its facilities could cope with the normal increase of its traditional business and the increased demand generated by the growth of its business environment. But with little available space to expand its facilities again. Aggregate estimated traffic potential 2 million TEUs in the year 2020.

The Strategic Plan for Development of the Murcia 2007 - 2013 finds that the project could attract the traffic of goods and make the port of Cartagena on one of the main drivers of regional economic activity is the construction of the Port of El Gorguel . Studies by the Port Authority of Cartagena is to say that a good site for the lower valuation of the ecological zone with respect to its environment and it allows drafts of up to 50 meters, the limit beyond which condition the profitability of the investment.
